5 Things: Friday, May 28, 2021

I think so much changed so fast that we all thought we’d never go back to “the way things were.”

Today’s 5 Things include misinformation on social media platforms and the grifters making money off it; the CDC’s awful mask guidance; the Jan. 6 commission that the republicans just blocked; bosses who very badly want to go back to paying people subsistence wages and micromanaging their every breath; and yet more on the lab leak theory (still super skeptical, thanks for asking).

A lot changed about employment during the Pandemic Year.

Many office workers got a taste of working from home and loved it, which opened up all kinds of interesting new changes and opportunities. A lot of retail, restaurant, and other low-wage workers realized just how incredibly crappy their jobs were, and that opened up some opportunities, too.

There was plenty of bad stuff, too, of course – “essential” workers being treated like garbage, people losing jobs, women being driven out of the work force because they were trying to work and school and care for their kids all at once, health workers run into the ground, and so on.

I think so much changed so fast that we all thought we’d never go back to “the way things were.” But it turns out the sociopathic corporations we work for have other ideas. Like getting back to paying people nothing and forcing people back into shitty offices so they can micromanage their every stray thought.

I dunno, guys. It feels like we learned some lessons here. Smart people would take what they learned and use it to make their employees happier. Pay your servers better. Let people work from home in their sweat pants. Cough up some daycare. More pet-friendly offices. I don’t think we have very many smart people running corporations, though.

There are two must-reads on this list. Both are horrifying.

Today’s 5 Things includes more on the COVID lab leak thing; an app called Citizen that appears to be a high tech way to generate lynch mobs backed by mercenaries; a criminal cop preying on Black people, bolstered by a corrupt system; republicans blocking the Jan. 6 commission; and the end of the pandemic.

There are two must-reads on this list: the Motherboard story and The Root’s article. Both are horrifying.

I’m definitely going to be on the hunt for freebies, lotteries, and whatever other junk I can rake in with my card.

Today’s 5 Things includes more on the Wuhan lab leak “theory” (I remain dubious, thanks); a Trump-related grand jury; a push for the public option; a great Twitter thread about how you get all those creepy ads on your phone; and vaccine freebies.

Look man, I was gonna get vaccinated anyway, but I’m definitely going to be on the hunt for freebies, lotteries, and whatever other junk I can rake in with my card.

5 Things: Tuesday, May 25, 2021

For the record, I am deeply dubious about this whole “Wuhan lab leak” thing that’s been going around lately.

Today’s 5 Things include how much trouble Rudy Giuliani might be in (spoiler: probably lots); the Wuhan lab leak “theory”; COVID-19 vaccinations in the US; COVID-19 on cruise ships; and “Havana Syndrome,” or that weird sonic attack/sickness US diplomats and spies are experiencing.

There’s two basic versions of the Wuhan lab leak story regarding COVID-19. One is that China developed and released the virus on purpose, and the other is that the virus was developed for “research purposes” at a lab in Wuhan and escaped accidentally. The evidence for either story or any of its various permutations seems mighty damn thin at best, and, as far as I can tell, is bolstered only by the fact that we can’t figure out where in the animal kingdom the virus may have spawned.

For the record, I am deeply dubious about this whole Wuhan lab leak thing. Here’s a good Twitter thread by Matt Tait, national security and information security expert, on why this “theory” is suspicious.

I dunno, folks. I guess it’s not technically impossible, but the Wuhan lab leak idea sounds like bullshit to me, so for now I’d take all that with a big ol’ grain of salt.

In other news, today is both the Glorious 25th of May, and Towel Day. So grab your towel and sprig of lilac, enjoy nerdy things, and remember to flip a few bucks to Alzheimer research.

Five news stories you should read today.

Today’s 5 Things include a couple of things about how toxic and harmful the GOP is being and the scare tactics they’re employing, what things might look like post-pandemic, work-from-home news, and making D.C. a state.
