COVID-19 Update: 772,157 Dead in the US

My friends and family in Michigan tell me that mostly they don’t see people wearing masks when they’re out and about, and, anecdotally, they seem to be hip deep in people who are too dumb to go get their damn shots. Or, I guess maybe not so much “anecdotally,” as COVID-19 cases are spiking. Again.

🦠 WDIV-TV: Michigan COVID: Here’s what to know Nov. 20, 2021

Michigan reported 17,980 new cases of COVID-19 and 128 virus-related deaths Friday — an average of 8,990 cases over a two-day period, nearly the highest daily case total we’ve recorded since the start of the pandemic.

Of the 128 deaths announced Friday, 71 were identified during a review of records.

Friday’s update brings the total number of confirmed COVID cases in Michigan to 1,242,253, including 23,232 deaths. These numbers are up from 1,224,273 cases and 23,104 deaths, as of Wednesday.

Testing has increased to around 40,000 diagnostic tests reported per day on average, with the 7-day positive rate at 17.12% as of Friday — an increase from last week. Hospitalizations have been steadily increasing for several weeks.

By way of comparison, here in Oregon, where we have a mask mandate, we reported 1,753 new cases between Nov. 19 and Nov. 21.

We still have our issues, of course. We’ve got our own idiot pile of anti-vaxxers, and people whining about wearing masks and throwing little temper tantrums when they’re asked to put their masks on and whatnot. I mostly get my groceries ordered in at the moment, but when I’ve occasionally had to go into the nearest grocery store, I’ve always seen at least one asshole with their mask under their nose or only wearing a plastic face shield.

It is mind-numbingly exhausting and nerve-wracking to see people still refusing to take basic precautions two years into this. I’m am utterly out of sympathy for people who won’t get their shots and/or who aren’t wearing their masks. It’s particularly upsetting to see it in Michigan, where my friends and family all still live, several of whom fall into the high risk category for various reasons.

The vaccines have been available for just under a year now, and it appears that, thanks to ignorant dipshits not getting their shots, at least as many people died this year from COVID-19 as died in 2020, before we had vaccines. Possibly more people died this year than last, depending on how the numbers shake out. Which is just. I mean. For fucksake, people. What the shit.

Get your shots. Get your boosters. Wear your masks. Quit your bitching.
